Accessible Fishing

Fishing Trip to Corral Creek April 28 & 29. Corral
Creek is 1.25 miles upstream from Bennett Peak. It
is a gentle float with excellent water that is easily
accessible. The weather was warm and sunny as
opposed to the trip to Grey Reef 2 weeks ago when
we had ice in the guides the whole weekend.
This section of the river can be floated in under an
hour but if you stop to anchor on a hole it can take all
day. On Saturday I caught 22 fish and on Sunday 15.
The river is still running low at about 400 cfs but it
should start increasing soon as the weather warms.
The water was clear enough to fish effectively. Fly
fishing produced a few fish with blue winged olive
nymphs. Streamers were ineffective, but Rapalas
were very good. I switched to spinning gear and
caught most of the fish that way.
This section of the river is very good at low flows and
especially so in the fall. Before runoff,if the water is
clear, the fishing can be excellent as it was this past
weekend.
The game warden stopped by and reported that the
current regs are going to change. Currently it is flies
and lures only. All fish 10"-16" are protected. 6 fish
can be creeled only one of which can exceed 16".
The proposed regs for 2008 would be flies and
lures only. 3 fish can be creeled only 1 can be over
16".
The fishery is as good as I've seen it in 30 years.
The old regs have worked well. The new regs will
allow better fish for the table and hopefully still
protect the fishery.
This one man raft was easy to anchor and work water. The Browns
were particularly keen on Rapalas.
These two Rainbows are typical of the larger
fish we caught. The one above is 20" and
one below is 16".
